Diary of a Wombat

This week, the children continued their work around the text 'Diary of a Wombat'. Last week, the children pretended that they were wombats being kept in a zoo and wrote their own letters to the zookeeper asking for improvements to their cage. These are in the children's literacy books for you to see.

This week, we imagined that we were escaping the zoo and burrowing down into the earth. The children made their own tunnel maps and practised using directional language as part of a set of instructions. We learned about 1/4 and 1/2 turns clockwise and anti-clockwise and all about using 'bossy words' or verbs to start an instruction.

Next, the children had a go at writing their own set of instructions, which really were fantastic. The children tried very hard with their presentation and made our class instruction set much better with their own adjectives and details - please do come and see them in our topic books.

Once we had written our instructions, we had a go at making a map of our secret wombat nests, including a key. We learned about how a key helps keep our map clear of labels. The children enjoyed making their wombat nest maps and just for fun we used our new skill to make our own pirate treasure maps!

Have a wonderful weekend, enjoy the snow and stay safe!
