How to wash a gruffalo

This week we have been learning all about instructions. We began by learning the story of 'how to wash a woolly mammoth', which if you ask, the children should be able to remember from our text map...

Let me know in the comments if any of you tried this at home!

Next, we had a go at changing parts of the story to make our own about how to wash a gruffalo. In small groups, we used post it notes on a box up of the original story to show which parts we might change.

We then took part in a 'shared write' as a class, where we wrote our own stories. Some of us filled in missing parts alongside teacher modelled work and several of us wanted to write our own from scratch.

Today, we decided it would be fun to have a go at making our own magic gruffalo cleaning potions using lots of magic ingredients. To find out how much of each ingredient to use, we had to solve the number clues. These included some of our work that we have been doing on number bonds to 20 (any extra work with these bonds e.g. 15+5=20, 13+7=20 at home would be FAB - flashcards, snap, youtube songs, memory games etc. We are thinking about how our existing knowledge of bonds to 10 5+5, 3+7 help us know our bonds to 20.) When we had solved a clue, we left more clues for our friends to find by thinking of different ways to make the number.

Of course, once we had found the ingredients needed, they needed a good mix! Here are the finished results. Be sure to ask your child how you should use the potion to wash a gruffalo, they have all made a fab set of directions for the potions too! A fantastic week of very hard work from all and I am incredibly proud. Well done. Have a super weekend.

The intruder!

This week we had a bit of a surprise! On Monday the children found footprints on the floor, scratches on the wall and a knocked over chair.

We had a good think as a class and came up with a few ideas. Maybe it was the cat we sometimes see? Maybe a dog? Maybe we left a window or door open and something got in? A few of us thought we might have been pranked!

We have done some beautiful writing this week related to the incident, including a wanted poster and our own short reports. We have also been looking carefully at sentences this week and noticing when they are incomplete. We have used our purple pens to correct mistakes and have put jumbled up sentences back together.

The children have also had the opportunity to go outside this week where several of them decided that they might like to build a trap to try to catch the mystery intruder.

Have a wonderful weekend, well done to all the children for their fantastic efforts at the talent show and thank you for all of the support that the children's families continue to show our school.

Home learning

WOW! The home learning from last half term was absolutely fantastic! It has been a joy to look at the children's home learning books. I love to see the children having a great time learning in a different setting and it really does help them to have your support at home, so thank you. Also, I was a bit jealous of all of those yummy afternoon teas!

Here are the class sharing their learning with their friends, they were so proud and loved showing their friends what they had been up to at home (:

Well done Orange Class - can't wait to see the next lot!

Shapes

Year One have settled back into school beautifully after half term and they have got straight back into their leaning.

The children learnt about 2D and 3D shapes last week. During our learning we went out to the forest school area, where we made shapes from sticks (photos are in your child's maths book). We also had a go at sculpting some 3D shapes using play dough. This helped us to look at and talk about the properties of these shapes. The children also enjoyed a shape hunt in the school grounds. Can you find any shapes at home?

Finley's party!

Our friend Finley will be starting a new school in September. To send him off, we decided to have a party! The children thought of some game...
