This week the children
have learned through hands on experience of measuring liquid. They started the
week by exploring vocabulary linked to volume (full, empty, half full etc.)
They then moved on to exploring measuring volume with more accuracy and were
introduced to measuring jugs and how to use them to measure in millilitres.
The children then added intervals
in millilitres to their water butts (rain collectors) using the measuring jugs so that they would
be able to see how much rain was in them.
Finally, the children
explored capacity and learned that this was the total amount of space in a
container. They explored and compared the capacity of several containers (measured
with cups) and some had a go at estimating the capacity before measuring it. The highlight for the children was when we discovered how the capacity of a zip lock bag changes depending on how you hold it and we saw (and felt!) what happened when the volume of liquid in a bag exceeded the capacity of the bag - eek!
Have a beautiful weekend in the sunshine and keep safe!
